AFCON Players
At the time of writing:

Aguerd and Kudus are called up

Algeria haven’t announced their squad yet - though Benrahma wasn’t in their last two squads after falling out with the coach

Cornet appears to have missed out on the Ivory Coast squad:

https://sportstar.thehindu.com/football/afcon-2024-host-ivory-coast-squad-no-wilfried-zaha-news/article67685837.ece

With Kudus gone and Paqueta possibly injured, maybe Cornet’s West Ham future isn’t completely sealed yet

Talking about Afcon iron cast on You Tube has a good interview with Freddie Kanoute.

And FWIW, I thought Haller was pretty crap, as he was throughout the tournament. Wonderful story, but not the player some people imagine we let go.

Re: AFCON Players
Had an absolutely brilliant time. I only saw the 3rd place and Final, but it was great to see SA win (I lived there for a bit so like them to do well) and the Final speaks for itself. The atmosphere was incredible - non-stop raucous support from about an hour beforehand. They sang loads of songs and everyone knew the words. They even went mad for the tournament song (which is brilliant - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QktjMQh2cFA&ab_channel=MagicSystemOfficiel) and knew all the words to that too - who ever really knows that song? The whole thing was joyous. The Euro 2020 Final wasn't quite the same!

Actually as soon as Ivory Coast got through we knew we were in trouble. Our flight out of the country was at 4am Monday morning - that's six hours post-match, but organisation to and from games has been so chaotic - people didn't get to the semi and were stuck in cars into the early hours. They'd made a plan for the Final and closed roads for designated buses, but even so, if they won we knew the buses wouldn't start until later and that people would flood the streets.

Shortly after the trophy was lifted we noticed people leaving so we jogged to where you get the bus from (a good 15 minutes, already wet through with sweat from being stationary!) to try and find a bus going to where we needed. It was as chaotic as expected, with people going mad. I saw what I thought was a firework from a bridge hit the stairs up to it, then a bang, then people running back the other way in a panic - tear gas, which I'm pretty sure it was fired accidentally. I've had that once before, but this was different - we couldn't turn back! It was agony for a few seconds (the pores on my bald sweaty noggin were ripe) but I had a soaking wet free t-shirt that I'd been mopping up my sweat with that I used to get through it. We eventually found a bus which took about 1h 40m to do the 20 mile journey, but we made it with time to spare in the end.

Saw a handful of Europeans at the 3rd place game and quite a lot more at the Final. You could tell at times, I think, who was a tourist and who was 'legacy' French (they were often in big groups and wearing a LOT more Ivory Coast gear). Quite a lot of North Africans there supporting them, but I felt they lived there too.

Good game and happy for Haller. Good player.

On the ball - how was it and was there many Europeans over there? I imagine its a good experience to go and watch an Afcon

Re: AFCON Players
Seb Haller scores the winning goal in the final.
Good finish too. Poacher’s goal.

Absolutely made up for him after what he’s been through. (Yes, I do mean his cancer, rather than having to play under Moyes/Pellegrini for us… Actually he’s not fond of Moyes for some reason.) Oh how we could do with a centre forward now.

Re: AFCON Players
Nah, not West. North, East and South, yes. What put us off years ago was the cost of the Nigerian visa, which has only got MUCH more expensive and harder to get since. For reference, North Korea was £20. Nigeria is paid mostly in USD, a bit in GBP, and a chunk with a Postal Order.

George Agdgdgwngo is a name I will be using a few times in the coming weeks, I suspect!

I figured that, I just wanted to shoehorn George Agdgdgwngo into the conversation!

You been down to those parts before?

The easiest* way to get to Ivory Coast is via Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana.

Nigeria?

Isn't it being played in the Ivory Coast?

Who sold you those tickets, George Agdgdgwngo? ;-)

Re: AFCON Players
I suspect that Said Benrahma allowed himself a wry simle last night. The Algeria manager seems a bit of a twat. And with Kudus coming back that might be a double relief for him.

You will all be delighted to hear that I managed to get tickets for the Final and 3rd place match on Friday. Behind the goal for £6.50 at the Final and on the half way line for £13 for 3rd place (look out for me in a WH home shirt next to a Gooner on the telly), which is balancing out (a little) the £378 I've had to spend so far on a visa for Nigeria.

There actually wasn't a result in that game that could've led to Ghana staying, be it a Mauritania win, an Algeria win or a draw.

Re: AFCON Players
Shame on a personal level for Kudus but at least he's back fit and should be perfectly rested and fine to start our next match. Possibly with some extra fire in his belly.

Can see Morocco getting at least to the semi finals so I don't imagine Aguerd will be back until the Forest game at the earliest. Although i suppose some are going to be pleased about that.

Re: AFCON Players
Ghana are in 3rd place in their group with 2 points.

There’s 6 groups with the top two in each group going through, and the 4 best 3rd placed teams going through (I think)

At present,Ivory Coast and Namibia both have 3 points. So we only need two more results out of four groups to go our way to get him back.
